”Little Jamaica”
Dublin Core
Title
”Little Jamaica”
Description
"The stretch of small businesses on Eglinton Avenue West from Allen Road to Dufferin Street are a part of a Black Caribbean community called 'Little Jamaica.' From the mass migration of Jamaicans and other Anglo-Caribbean citizens to Canada from the early sixties to late seventies a small business class grew close to where the Caribbean community had settled in Toronto. Restaurants/ grocery stores/ bakeries/ record shops/ beauty salons and barbershops brought people from far and wide to Eglinton Avenue West especially on the weekends. Gentrification spurred by high rents/ lack of business/ and transit improvements are slowly eroding what is left of Little Jamaica today."
